Babies come at any time of day or night!

Please remember that our midwives provide 24/7 care, and need to cover each other to do so. This means that even though you page your midwife, the midwife that responds may be someone you weren’t expecting or never met before.

While we aim to have a known midwife with you in labour, this cannot be guaranteed.

Reasons to Page

Call the pager for any of the following:

1. If you have a 4-1-1 contraction pattern. This means:

● Contractions are 4 minutes apart from the start of one to the start of the next
● The contraction lasts one minute long
● This has been going on for at least one hour

If contractions are not strong, long and close together, take Tylenol (500-1000mg) and Gravol (50-100 mg) and have a warm bath or shower, put on the TENS machine, try to rest as much as possible

2. If your water breaks (put on a pad). This can be a trickle of fluid, or a gush. Monitor the colour of the fluid by putting on a pad.

3. “Bloody show” or blood tinged mucus from your vagina is normal; heavy, bright red bleeding like a menstrual period, or blood running down your leg, is not normal.

4. If you have concerns about your baby’s movement. You may not notice fetal movement during contractions, but you should feel fetal movement between contractions.

5. If you need to! If you aren’t sure what to do, call the urgent line.
